a lot of 'cue

...

Last week, Jon and I went to the Kangaroo Boxing Club, which opened a little more than a week ago in Columbia Heights on 11th between Park and Monroe streets. It's a brick-and-mortar BBQ joint run by the folks behind the Porc Mobile food truck, and serves up all the hits--including smoked Angus sloppy joes and gorgonzola mac-n-cheese (my order, mmmm).

The place is small and dimly lit. Behind the bar, which is packed, an old fireplace serves as a liquor shelf, and on the walls are poster-size snapshots of historic Washington. On each table: a carrier with five squeeze bottles of house-made barbeque sauces.Yum!

Jon's plate of fries and pulled pork--smoked for 16 hours over hickory and applewood--came out quick and hot; and though my smoked sloppy joe needed no additional flavoring, I couldn't help but squirt a little Sweet Hot sauce for good measure. We opted for the dessert sampler (which included a peanut-butter-bacon cookie--WOW), and the meal was still cheap. We will definitely be back, as the place is kid-friendly to boot.

Sunday presented another opportunity for bone-suckin' barbeque. We hit the National Capital Barbeque Battle, the annual food and music festival that shuts down Pennsylvania Avenue in Northwest for two days. The festival was far bigger than we expected, with an estimated 150,000 people taking advantage of the free samples and enjoying the live music.

I'm glad we went, for the people watching alone. But, as far as barbeque goes, meh. I mean, it was good. Barbeque is goooood. But Jon smokes some mean meat, and this festival wasn't cheap. (Though it did benefit the Boys and Girls Club, so...)

We have lots of summertime fun in the next week and a half. Until then...
xx!
