billy balls

Soon, like many people this time of year, Jon and I will be taking off on a few long weekends away from home. Before skipping town, I always make sure the house is more or less tidy--bed made, dishes done--so that our homecoming is a welcome one. Well, what's more welcoming than coming home to a vase full of bright flowers?

Yesterday I picked up a few stems of Billy balls. Also known as Billy buttons and Craspedia, these flowers feature long green stems, on top of which rests a happy yellow powdered pompom. Best yet: They dry really well, so you won't have stinky water to change out upon your return. I popped ours into a funky-looking old beer bottle, set the arrangement in our bathroom, and--voila!--they should last us clear through Labor Day.
